The Clemson Area African American Museum offers exhibits throughout the year. The museum features semi-permanent, fine art and pop-up exhibits.

Face Jugs Exhibit

The Clemson Area African American Museum is proud to feature the work of Mr. Robert Kemp.

Face jugs created by native artist, Robert Kemp, are on display at CAAAM. Kemp’s jugs possess their own personalities with his use of fun and whimsical facial expressions. He also brings his face jugs to life with the use of color and ornamentation to create unique characters with names to match. Visit the museum and view these wonderful pieces in person.

Sewful Expressions

The Clemson Area African American Museum (CAAAM) is proud to present Sewful Expressions, featuring the work of celebrated artist and quilter Sheila Gaines.

A native to the Clemson area, Gaines' work is rooted in heritage, creativity, and
connection. What began as making clothing for herself and her family has
grown into a passion for quilting and textile art. Since beginning her quilting
journey in 2000, Gaines has crafted over one hundred quilts that reflect her
commitment to craftmanship, storytelling, and continuous learning.
Gaines has previously showcased her work at the Fran Hanson Discovery
Center at the SC Botanical Gardens alongside her mentor, Anna Willis, and at
Centre Stage Greenville in collaboration with the opening of Quilting the Sun, a
play by Grace Cavalieri. She previously taught quilting classes at the Littlejohn

Community Center.

Sports Exhibit

"Sincerely, Daniel"

Sinerely, Daniel was a sports exhibition celebrating 50 years (1964-2014) of black athletic excellence at D.W. Daniel High School. This exhibition highlighted the journey of athletes who made significant contributions to the local, national and international sports history and also featured 10 athletes who went on to play professionally.

The Clemson Area African American Museum (CAAAM) is located in the former segregated Calhoun Colored School. The Calhoun Colored School was named after the surrounding area which is now known as Clemson. The museum shares this space with The Arts Center and the Clemson Child Development Center.
